Oh I’m supposed to just choke? Supposed to be quiet but supposed to be woke? Supposed to buy a home, college loans n a phone But I ain’t ‘posed to voice up, serve my people, n vote? Nope.
This is power to the people, power to your passion Power to the peace, power to your action Power to the feelin of goin all in on our chances Power to our fire that’s leavin liars in ashes
So we listen when it’s easier to speak Guide the ship when it’s easier to leap Find the wisdom when the times are lookin bleak Forgive the shooter while the preacher tries to teach

At first, it seems like the mountain is endless, some- Times, it never feels like you’re outta the Trenches, just a Ballad of pensive, thoughts before you Ought, to do drop what you’re doing and Stop browsin’ your friends-list Just sittin’ back with your alibi Maybe askin’ how I can do I want? I’m- Out of attention To pay…I spent it, out on the fences Never paid dues, s’why you ain’t amount to a tenth of, what you- Could be-I could name a thousand incentives, why you- Should be, hustlin’ the hours are endless, you’re just- Sufferin’ from not startin’ at all, puttin’ your heart on the wall and bleedin’ out like a hemorrhage Knowing it’s a cycle, you get to the finish and then it starts with exactly when a palendrome ends with Then go backwards, do it all again, ain’t no countin’ the ounces of blood and gallons of sweat-dripped
But I’ve been countin the censors Countin the mentions of men who said you won’t make it Countin dissension Countin the senses spent Countin the embers left, while you sat n you waited Well I counted the lessons, n you can count on my presence Count on my message so you can stop hittin pause Count on my venom, for these fkin facades Count on my weapon To fk up these squads…I’m fkin up laws I’m fkin up gods Mirages of phony friends, who said they’d be there Politics played, when you needed them there Excuses were made n you were left in the flames No matter what they say they weren’t found anywhere You can find me in your vision Found in collisions between your mission n btches Who written you off, we’re goin off So you can find me in riches, find me in wisdom Fightin these bigots fightin these crickets Chirpin n missed it find me n listen
Now I know you’re pissed, But do you mind if I mention, there’s a Time and a place For your fire and brimstone The fire is in stone But, I’m asking you now to Deny your own impulse…
My pulse is in overdrive, I’m over guys over lies Over these bloodsuckers…these vultures undercover Like they ‘posed to be on my side But now they been scrutinized N now it’s just you and I I vow to rain sulfur, raise thunder, now you decide
Now you could try the toxic way Usually it rots your brain Eulogy of thoughts, in a box… You shouldn’t walk this way You should be the voice of reason Get up off the train You should stop perpetuating Endless strings of awful days
Day to day I’ll make em pay Facin fate with heavy weight Till my body breaks away I’m makin change in any way
My eyes open with fog risin from my mouth Winter night where we try to stay inside the house A boy takes his dinner, n he hands it out To help the poorer find a better route Cause we choose love We kick our shoes off So we can walk in the steps of the less off So we can understand the blessed and the went wrong Find the lesson when we’re dealin with the present instead of skippin to the next song Share chances instead of passin blame Light candles instead of lightin flames Known for character instead of your mistakes Hold a hand before we get to heartbreak This is that, wait a minute, no they didn’t, yes they did Bold in pursuit for the old n the youth Only one, now it’s two, now it’s you, then it’s true Light the fires like woooo, we choose love
In South Asian culture, food is a big deal. It’s the way you show love to people. Someone gets married, treat them to a meal. The kids are visiting, treat them to a meal. I think it’s partially because South Asians appreciate the craft of shaping quality food. For some people, it’s the escape they need from a life without means or opportunity. For first generation immigrants, like my parents, it’s a rare and constant reminder of home.
I remember a couple years ago, my mom was visiting from Florida and she went down to Wilmington, Delaware to visit a friend. We were picking her up in Philly, where my wife’s family lives. Perfectly simple travel story, except that my mom showed up at the door with three bags with twenty green peppers. Twenty green peppers! I had the audacity to get upset at her. For one, why did this small 5’2” woman decide to bring twenty green peppers on a bus from Wilmington? We have green peppers in New York!
Two, who needs twenty green peppers?
See, our generation, we don’t see food the way our parents did. Sure, we love food, and especially love posting pictures of food on social media so other people can comment and like and build our self esteem. But my mom, she didn’t care about any of that – she just wanted to show love.
The funny thing is, my values on food somehow changed since college. When I went to school at Penn State, my parents lived in India. Whenever my friends whose parents lived nearby came back from the holidays with containers of home-cooked food, or even fresh produce, I was jealous.
You know what my mom sent me? You already know you can’t send twenty green peppers overseas.
So she sent me medicine. Lots and lots of medicine. Again, I didn’t appreciate the gesture. I was like, all my friends are receiving love with home-cooked food, and you’re sending me the Indian version of Ben Gay? My dad is old school and hardcore, he was like, just shut up and study hard, or else you’ll be on the street begging for peppers.
My mom is my hero, and even though I’ve spent the past several years trying to make that known as much as I can, the reality is that she’s lived a thankless life. But it’s a life of love, a life of refusing to run away from challenges. That love and fire to keep going propels her every day.
And sometimes, the love is returned in unexpected ways.
Fk ya freedom of speech All it’s doin is freein dumb speech …I’m freezin drum beats Make it sound like a bomber flyin Dun-kirk beach Brilli-ant militant, pillagin villages Rivetin rhythms while livin in the spirit Of prohibited, lyrical moves, unlimited Who’s, the next victim, I, wooo…finish him …Mohandas chopper, un-apolo- getic Occupy ya mind, ignite the movement It’s more than just that, I’m movin in I'm roastin s’mores up, up inside that btch Fly the switches, fire lightin sshhhh Might burn ya soul up when I’m out ya lips Might turn the flow up if ya don’t resist…resist These fake messiah men Talk a lot but they ain’t inspir-in ….So I aim n fire bars, where my eyes are Target rich environment Narinator called me an alien Meanin I’m way out the barriers Even with 51 aerials n Harriet jets, you ain’t in my area

If I stumble, if I fall If I ever lose it all When my back hits the wall I’ll still be standing If I crumble till I’m gone If I cry until I’m numb When the lights go out that’s when I illuminate Illuminate…illuminate…illuminate That’s when I illuminate
I knew the instant when I wouldn’t be alone You didn’t have me at hello, but instead, let’s go Made me roll dice for chances, pass go’s Saved me when life, branded me an asshole Now I can sit here actin like I been a victim That’s like sendin fact n fiction in collisions He’s sarcastic, too guarded, didn’t listen N that’s just when I was young, now it’s my tradition Cruisin through the rules life was movin too fast My ego wrote checks that my body couldn’t cash N even with a laugh, you helped me find worth When I seemed to be crass, you dealt with my quirks You’re like an artist with a genius in the mind The primer on the surface, the silver in the lines You gave me courage…then you raised the curtains Now it’s up to me the masterpiece of your design
Rise high to the moment n you’ll severe regrets Karma ain’t a btch, she just never forgets You hoped to be alone but she followed your steps Swore it was a stalker but it dawned on you next This long journey…often rocky Warm or cold…won’t let it stop me If you need me…you’re on the hot seat You know you got me…mille grazie
This is that, fifth floor walk up sht No AC with the humidity risin From the dollar pizza store on the ground floor cookin up pies n Doors, ain’t inside, two sisters n parents shoved inna one bedroom While the scratchy TV with the crooked antenna sends us messages Of Reagan n contras It didn’t change us to monsters, nah, it made us weigh options Like if the promise of New York is worth all the toxins But to be honest, that was the last thing on my noggin I was a nerd before it was cool…with my volcano projects I went from launchin that lava, to spittin hot fire In between, I was Liu Kang, breathin out flames Now I’m hotter than microwaves without the spy game Hotter than New York in the winter…climate change Teacher lectured at the chalkboard but I was bored with it So I acted out like Broadway was my callin but those were the days of broken windows Which meant that every little transgression would make my punishments more twisted More hours in timeout in a broken system But I guess that’s what made me a tour de force I wasn’t a normal kid Since the days of four score my opponents have been re-writin history Like who scored, who’s winnin, they don’t want war, they flinchin They merely adopted the dark…I was born in it
Super 8, this is Super 8, ya this is Super 8, this is Super 8, ya this is
Nowadays it’s like all of the actions are driven by like counts Retweets, and follow backs, but I’m from a path with only two sweaters For two types of weather At least they matched, cause back to that fateful day in Sears I was a little fresher, mom attached And she placed me in front of a professional camera for the first time ever Other kids knew what it was like to be the center With their Anne Geddes bullsht man I was just happy to learn letters Later I wrote my own math equations n then rhymes with no hype man Today I’ll put you in your grave, that’s the only way I’m ghostwritin Now that I’ve found a little fame The cameras come around a little more often But I’ve still got that me against the world focus While I’m scorin up coffins You wouldn’t blame me if gettin paid was my motive If those years in Queens only served to make me bitter So in my return to Queens years later I aimed to be a winner Yet I’ve been around enough mthafkas who chase money Hopin it’ll stick like honey, but nah It sticks like a piece of tape that’s been reused all over the place N now there’s fabric all over Fabric that’s been ripped from the cloth of your soul N all that’s left is a lost loner So I’ve crossed over Tryin to be a man of the people, look into the eyes that they see through Keep fightin until we movin the needle While provin on the mic, that I have no fkin equal
My mom is a teacher, and throughout her career, she’s touched the lives of thousands of students across the world. Some of those students and their parents don’t remember her. She didn’t always have good technology or supplies. She’s never been paid enough for what she does.
But that’s never stopped her. One of the distinctive parts of her teaching style is she incorporates service learning and civic engagement into lessons throughout the year. She’s been doing this for a long time, and made a pretty good impact in communities of need.
My mom tells me the stories from her classroom full of pure joy. She doesn’t do it with the intention of changing the world, and she oftentimes wonders if it’s making a big difference. But she does it anyway, because she’s fueled by love, and she knows no other way.
A few years ago, her lessons on charity particularly affected one of her third graders. He participated in her work with Food for the Poor, one of the nation’s largest hunger relief and development organizations, and the plight facing malnourished children around the world motivated him to do more.
This third grader by the name of Rafe Cochran saw how critical, how important food can be to someone. In a way that most of us don’t really understand.
Rafe also happened to be a golf prodigy, so he decided to give back in the way he knew how. He started donating his winnings to Food for the Poor, and encouraged his family and friends to do the same in his honor.
A couple months ago, Rafe attended the annual Food for the Poor gala in West Palm Beach – the second home of Donald Trump, as you may know. The event raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for hunger relief efforts across the world. Rafe wasn’t attending because of his parents, or to auction off a golf lesson with him.
Rafe was attending because he was being honored for his work as a 12-year old philanthopist. When he gave his speech, his words were full of compassion, and love, and a fire to keep doing whatever he can with the tools that are available to him.
He thanked one person in that speech. Not his mom. Not his dad. Not anyone from Food for the Poor.
He thanked my mom, the person who opened his eyes to charity and the importance of doing whatever you can to create a better future.

I’ve met Rafe. He’s incredibly polite and truly has his head on his shoulders the right way. He’s also a kid at heart – I played in his recent golf tournament, which benefitted Food for the Poor, as you might imagine, and one wall of the dining area was lined with every type of candy you could imagine. It was like the concessions area of a movie theater had exploded into the room.
Rafe is also a hell of a golfer, by the way. He crushed me.
This journey didn’t end with Rafe being honored with the gala, and it isn’t taking a backseat now that Rafe is entering middle school. He’s discovering even more love, even more fuel for his fire, and he keeps lighting it with every opportunity he has.
Last month, my mom visited St. Ann, Jamaica, the poorest parish in all of Jamaica. She went there to surprise Rafe as he cut the ribbon on a new school that he was able to build through his philanthropy. He didn’t know that she was coming. But Rafe had a surprise waiting for my mom, when he pulled back a curtain to reveal a classroom that was dedicated in my mom’s honor.
Sometimes, when you don’t even realize it’s happening, you change someone’s life. And then that person goes on to change the world.
And changing the world is simpler than you think.
It doesn’t have to be rocket science. We don’t need ideas that will win the Nobel Prize or place us on Time Magazine. We don’t need to be the President of the United States – and we sure as hell don’t need to rely on any President of the United States.
We just need our love. We just need our fire. We just need each other, because we gain love and fire from one another.
Let’s face it, this moment in our history has given us every reason to stop believing in love, and to throw water on our fire. We had Obama, the first black president, and we said we were fired up and ready to go, but really we wanted him to bring the fire and to be ready for us. We thought we were going to have the first woman president and we were fired up again, and then it didn’t happen. Then we got fired up again and started marching and making noise, but the government still feels stuck, doesn’t it?
But my mom, she didn’t need any particular president. She didn’t need anyone’s affirmation. She barely needed anyone’s money. She had love. She had fire. Occasionally, it manifested into green peppers and medicine.
That love and fire has changed my life, and Rafe’s life, and literally tens of thousands more. Now it’s up to us.
So LIT Network, I ask you this: whose fire are you going to ignite, whose torch are you going to light, tonight, and tomorrow, and the next day?
Is anyone going to take your love from you?
Are you going to run away?
Are you going to run this moment?
Are we going to get lit?
